The CHICAGO-LATROBE 44817 is a taper length cobalt drill bit designed for high-performance drilling in hard and abrasive materials. Built from M42 cobalt high-speed steel with a black oxide finish, it delivers superior heat and wear resistance compared to standard HSS bits. The 135-degree split point reduces walking and allows self-centering starts without a center punch. At 17/64 inch in diameter with a 3-7/8 inch flute length and 6-1/4 inch overall length, this bit suits applications where a longer reach is needed beyond a jobber-length tool. Installation Notes

Install in a drill press or CNC spindle with the shank fully seated and the chuck or collet tightened to tool-holding specifications before starting the cut. Use cutting fluid or coolant appropriate for the workpiece material - cobalt tooling tolerates dry cutting in many ferrous applications, but lubrication extends tool life in stainless and nickel alloys. Secure the workpiece firmly to prevent movement during drilling. Inspect the cutting edges before each use; cobalt bits are brittle under lateral load and should not be used in applications with significant side pressure.
