The CHICAGO-LATROBE 44383 is a jobber length drill bit sized to letter M (0.2950 inches), manufactured from high speed steel with a bright uncoated finish. It features a 118-degree standard point angle with web thinning and a tapered web configuration that reduces thrust during entry. The two-flute spiral design with a regular helix promotes chip evacuation in a wide range of materials. At 4.375 inches overall length with a 3.0625-inch flute length and a straight-cylindrical shank diameter of 0.2950 inches, this bit is sized for standard drill chucks and drill presses used in everyday trade work. It carries a DIN 338 standard designation and is rated as a general-purpose tool.
The 44383 is suited for drilling non-ferrous metals including aluminum, brass, copper, and similar materials in light industrial, mechanical, and trade applications. It fits jobber-length drilling tasks where a standard reach is appropriate and a full-length bit is not required. The straight-cylindrical shank seats directly in keyed or keyless chucks without adapters. It is sold individually and works well as a bench spare or a replacement for worn bits in an existing set covering the 0.2500 to 0.3000 inch size range.
Designed as a general-purpose jobber length drill bit for use in standard drill chucks accepting a 0.2950-inch straight-cylindrical shank, suitable for drill presses, hand drills, and benchtop drilling equipment in non-ferrous metal and similar general-purpose applications.
Installation is performed by machinists, maintenance technicians, and trade professionals using standard keyed or keyless drill chucks. Secure the shank fully in the chuck before operation and verify chuck key removal prior to starting the spindle. When drilling non-ferrous metals, use appropriate cutting fluid or lubricant to extend tool life and improve hole quality. Inspect the cutting edges and point for wear before each use and replace the bit if chipping or blunting is observed.
