The CHICAGO-LATROBE 44182 is a jobber-length drill bit sized at Letter L (0.290 inches decimal), manufactured from high speed steel with a black oxide coating for reduced friction and improved chip evacuation. It features a 118-degree standard point angle with web thinning on a tapered web, which reduces thrust and improves center starting on ferrous materials. The overall length is 4.25 inches with a 2-15/16-inch spiral flute length and a straight cylindrical shank diameter of 0.290 inches. This is a two-flute, right-hand cut bit with a regular spiral, conforming to DIN 338 standards. It is sold individually and suits general-purpose production and maintenance drilling applications.
This bit is designed for drilling cast iron and steel in general-purpose shop, maintenance, and production environments. The jobber-length format makes it a common choice for hand-held drill presses and bench-top drilling operations where a standard reach-to-diameter ratio is appropriate. The HSS construction and oxide finish make it a cost-effective option for day-to-day ferrous drilling tasks performed by machinists, maintenance technicians, pipefitters, and fabricators working with mild and medium-hardness steels.
Designed as a general-purpose jobber-length drill bit suitable for use in standard three-jaw drill chucks accepting a 0.290-inch straight shank. Primary workpiece materials are cast iron and steel per manufacturer specification.
Secure the bit fully in the chuck before operation and verify there is no runout before drilling. Use appropriate cutting fluid or coolant when drilling steel to extend tool life, noting that this bit is rated for use without coolant-through. Inspect the cutting edges for wear before each use; a dull or chipped point increases heat and can cause drill wander. Follow applicable shop safety practices including proper workpiece fixturing to prevent rotation during drilling.
