The CHICAGO-LATROBE 44174 is a jobber length drill bit sized to Letter D (0.2460 inches) and manufactured from high speed steel with an oxide coating for improved wear resistance. Built to Series 150 standards and conforming to DIN 338, this bit features a 118-degree standard point angle, a regular spiral flute with web-thinned geometry, and a straight-cylindrical shank. Overall length is 4.0 inches with a flute length of 2.75 inches. The web-thinned, tapered web configuration reduces thrust during entry and improves chip evacuation. Licensed trades and metalworking professionals choose this bit for general-purpose drilling in production and maintenance environments.
The 44174 is designed for right-hand cutting in cast iron and steel workpieces. Its 2-flute spiral design handles both ferrous and general shop materials across a range of applications including fabrication, maintenance repair, and light production drilling. The straight-cylindrical shank accepts standard 3-jaw drill chucks found on bench drills, hand drills, and magnetic-base drills. No coolant-through capability is present, making this bit suited for dry or externally lubricated setups typical in general shop use.
Designed as a general-purpose jobber length drill bit compatible with any standard 3-jaw drill chuck that accepts a 0.2460-inch straight-cylindrical shank. Primary workpiece materials are cast iron and steel.
Installation and use of this drill bit is performed by machinists, maintenance technicians, pipefitters, and other trades requiring metal drilling. Secure the straight-cylindrical shank firmly in a properly sized drill chuck before use and verify chuck key is removed before powering on the tool. Apply appropriate cutting fluid or lubricant when drilling steel to extend tool life and maintain dimensional tolerance. Inspect the cutting edges for wear or chipping before each use and replace the bit if the point geometry is compromised.
