The CHICAGO-LATROBE 44148 is a jobber-length drill bit designed for general-purpose drilling in metalworking applications. Manufactured from high speed steel with an oxide coating, it carries a wire gauge size of 78, which corresponds to a decimal diameter of 0.0160 inches. The 118-degree standard point angle and web-thinned, tapered web geometry help the tip locate and penetrate without walking. With an overall length of 0.875 inches and a flute length of 0.1875 inches, this bit is sized for precision work in tight clearances. It is installed by machinists, tool-and-die tradespeople, and maintenance technicians working in production or field environments.
The 44148 is suited for drilling cast iron and steel in light-duty and production drilling scenarios. The straight-cylindrical shank fits standard drill chucks without an adapter. Its regular spiral flute geometry and two-flute configuration provide consistent chip evacuation in ferrous materials. The Series 150 designation places it in Chicago-Latrobe's general-purpose line, making it a common choice for maintenance shops, fabrication benches, and assembly operations that require reliable small-diameter drilling in metal substrates. Conforms to DIN 338 standards.
Designed as a general-purpose jobber-length drill bit for use in standard drill chucks compatible with a 0.0160 inch straight-cylindrical shank. Primary workpiece materials are cast iron and steel.
Machinist or maintenance technician installation. Secure the straight-cylindrical shank firmly in a keyed or keyless drill chuck before use. Ensure the workpiece is clamped or fixtured to prevent movement during drilling. Use appropriate cutting fluid or lubricant when drilling steel to extend tool life and maintain hole quality. Inspect the point geometry for wear or chipping before each use, as small-diameter bits at this size range are susceptible to breakage under side load or misalignment.
