The CHICAGO-LATROBE 44118 is a jobber-length drill bit designed for general-purpose drilling in metal fabrication, maintenance, and light production work. Built from high speed steel with an oxide coating, it carries a wire gauge size of 48, equal to 0.0760 inches in diameter. The 118-degree standard point angle and two-flute spiral design provide efficient chip evacuation and consistent entry geometry on a range of ferrous and non-ferrous materials. The straight-cylindrical shank seats securely in standard drill chucks. Overall length is 2 inches with a 1-inch flute length. This bit is a Series 150 tool conforming to DIN 338, making it a recognized standard in the trade.
This drill bit is suited for drilling cast iron and steel in residential, commercial, and industrial maintenance applications. The web-thinned, tapered web construction reduces thrust requirements, which is useful when drilling smaller-diameter holes in harder stock. Its compact jobber length makes it appropriate for use in tight clearance situations and standard drill press or hand-drill applications where a shorter reach is preferred by machinists and maintenance technicians.
Designed as a general-purpose replacement or production drill bit for use in standard drill presses, hand drills, and CNC drilling operations where a wire-gauge jobber-length HSS bit is specified. Primary workpiece materials listed are cast iron and steel.
This bit is installed and removed by a qualified machinist or maintenance technician using a standard keyed or keyless drill chuck rated for the shank diameter. Secure the workpiece before drilling to prevent movement. Inspect the cutting edges and point for wear or chipping before each use; a damaged point will produce oversized or off-location holes. Follow applicable shop safety practices, including eye protection and appropriate spindle speed selection for the workpiece material and bit diameter.
