The CHICAGO-LATROBE 44085 is a jobber length drill bit sized at No. 15 wire gauge (0.1800 inches decimal equivalent), manufactured from high speed steel with an oxide coating for added wear resistance. Part of the Series 150 line, it is built for general purpose drilling in steel and cast iron. The 118-degree standard point and web-thinned tip promote accurate starting and reduce thrust during entry. With an overall length of 3-3/8 inches and a flute length of 2-3/16 inches, this bit handles typical through-hole and blind-hole work encountered in metal fabrication, mechanical assembly, and HVAC or plumbing rough-in tasks.
This bit is suited for use in production and maintenance drilling applications involving cast iron and steel workpieces. It meets DIN 338 standards, making it a recognized format across trade and industrial settings. The straight-cylindrical shank seats securely in standard drill chucks, keyed or keyless, used by machinists, pipefitters, ironworkers, and general tradespeople. Individual packaging makes it practical for tool cribs, service vans, or bench kits where single-piece restocking is needed.
Designed as a general purpose jobber length drill bit compatible with standard drill chucks accepting a 0.1800-inch straight-cylindrical shank, suitable for drilling cast iron and steel in a wide range of trade and industrial applications.
Secure the shank fully in the drill chuck before operation and verify chuck key is removed prior to starting the drill. Use appropriate cutting fluid or coolant when drilling steel to extend bit life and maintain hole tolerance. Operate at drill speeds appropriate for the workpiece material and bit diameter per standard machining references. Inspect the cutting edges for wear or chipping before each use and replace if the point shows deterioration that could cause wandering or oversized holes.
