The CHICAGO-LATROBE 44039 is a jobber-length drill bit designed for general-purpose drilling in cast iron and steel. Built from high speed steel with an oxide coating, it runs a standard 118-degree point angle that suits a wide range of production and maintenance drilling tasks. The bit measures 7-1/8 inches overall with a 5-3/16-inch flute length, giving it the reach needed for most through-hole and blind-hole applications. The straight-cylindrical shank accepts standard 3-jaw drill chucks without adapters. A tapered web with web thinning reduces thrust at the point and improves chip evacuation during cut entry. This bit is sized at 39/64 inches (0.6094 inches decimal) with a diameter tolerance of -0.0012 to 0.0000 inches, meeting DIN 338 standards.
The 44039 fits residential and commercial maintenance work, fabrication shops, HVAC equipment assembly, and general metalworking. It is suited for any trade professional drilling into cast iron or steel substrates where a reliable general-purpose bit is required. The 2-flute spiral configuration with a regular spiral type handles chip clearance efficiently in both hand-held and bench-mounted drilling equipment. Right-hand cutting direction is standard for conventional drill press and handheld drill use.
Designed as a general-purpose jobber-length drill bit compatible with standard drill chucks accepting a straight-cylindrical shank. Primary workpiece materials are cast iron and steel. Coolant-through capability is not supported on this bit.
Installation and use should be performed by a qualified machinist, maintenance technician, or trade professional familiar with drill press or handheld drill operation. Secure the workpiece fully before drilling to prevent movement and bit breakage. Use appropriate cutting fluid or lubrication when drilling steel to extend bit life and maintain hole quality. Inspect the cutting edges for wear or chipping before each use and replace the bit if damage is found.
