The CHICAGO-LATROBE 42717 is a high-speed steel jobber-length drill bit in wire gauge size 47 (0.0785 inches decimal equivalent), designed for precision drilling in demanding materials. It features a 135-degree split point that reduces walking and lowers the thrust required to start a hole, and a TiAlN (titanium aluminum nitride) coating that improves heat resistance and extends tool life at elevated cutting speeds. The overall length is 2 inches with a 1-inch flute length. This bit is built to NAS 907 Type B standards and is suited for production and maintenance drilling performed by machinists, tool-and-die technicians, and industrial maintenance trades.
The 42717 is rated for drilling stainless steel and cast iron, two materials that demand both sharp geometry and thermal resistance. The regular spiral flute with web-thinned, tapered web construction promotes efficient chip evacuation and reduces cutting forces in tough ferrous workpieces. Its straight cylindrical shank fits standard drill chucks used in drill presses, CNC machining centers, and hand drills. Typical applications include precision hole-making in fabrication shops, maintenance facilities, and production environments where consistent hole size and surface finish in hard materials are required.
Designed for drilling stainless steel and cast iron workpieces. Fits any standard drill chuck accepting a straight cylindrical shank. Compatible with drill presses, CNC machining centers, and portable electric drills used in production and maintenance applications.
Install and remove drill bits only when the machine spindle is fully stopped and the power source is locked out per applicable safety procedures. Secure the straight shank fully in the chuck and verify concentricity before beginning a cut. Use appropriate cutting fluid or coolant for stainless steel applications to manage heat buildup, especially at sustained cutting speeds. Inspect the cutting edges and coating condition before each use; a damaged or worn split point should be resharpened or the bit replaced to maintain hole tolerance.
