The CHICAGO-LATROBE 42015 is a jobber length drill bit designed for heavy-duty drilling in steel and similar ferrous materials. Built from M7 high speed steel with a titanium carbonitride (TiCN) coating, it delivers extended wear resistance and reduced friction compared to uncoated HSS tooling. The 135-degree notched point reduces thrust and allows self-centering on flat or curved surfaces without a center punch. At 3-7/8 inches overall length with a 2-5/8 inch flute length, this bit fits standard drill chucks and drill presses used daily in mechanical, HVAC, and fabrication work. It is sold as a single bit in the Series 150WLPN line.
This drill bit is suited for production and maintenance drilling in steel, including structural steel, sheet metal, and fabricated assemblies. The parabolic flute geometry promotes aggressive chip evacuation, which matters in deeper holes where chip packing causes heat buildup and premature wear. The straight-cylindrical shank seats securely in standard 3-jaw chucks. Typical users include HVAC fabricators, pipefitters, electricians, and general maintenance technicians drilling mounting holes, conduit knockouts, and bracket stock. The right-hand cut is compatible with all standard clockwise-rotation power drills and drill presses.
Designed for use in standard drill presses, magnetic drills, and handheld power drills equipped with a 3-jaw chuck sized for a 0.2344 inch shank diameter. Primary workpiece material is steel, consistent with Series 150WLPN heavy-duty HSS jobber tooling.
Secure the shank fully in the chuck and verify concentricity before drilling. Use appropriate cutting fluid or coolant when drilling steel to manage heat, particularly in deep-hole applications. Disconnect power to the drill press or secure the handheld drill trigger before changing bits. Inspect the cutting edges and TiCN coating for wear or chipping before each use; a damaged point should be reground or the bit replaced to avoid work-hardening the material.
