The CHICAGO-LATROBE 42012 is a heavy-duty jobber length drill bit designed for production and maintenance drilling in steel and similar ferrous materials. Built from M7 high speed steel with a titanium carbonitride (TiCN) coating, this bit delivers extended tool life and reduced friction compared to uncoated HSS tooling. It measures 3/16 inch (0.1875 inch) in diameter with a 3-1/2 inch overall length and a 135-degree notched split point that starts on contact without a center punch. The parabolic flute geometry evacuates chips efficiently during deep-hole drilling. HVAC technicians, plumbers, and electricians reach for this size regularly when drilling sheet metal, strut, and light structural steel in the field.
The 42012 is suited for drilling steel in both residential and light commercial trade applications. The 3/16 inch diameter is a common size for pilot holes, anchor locations, wire-pass-through points, and sheet metal penetrations. The straight-cylindrical shank fits standard 3-jaw drill chucks on corded drills, cordless drills, and drill presses without an adapter. The parabolic flute profile and web-thinned, tapered web reduce thrust requirements, making it practical for hand-held drilling where feed pressure is limited. Series 150WLPN is Chicago-Latrobe's heavy-duty line for steel cutting applications.
Designed as an OEM-style jobber length drill bit for use in any standard 3-jaw drill chuck accepting a 3/16 inch straight-cylindrical shank. Primary workpiece material is steel; Series 150WLPN is rated for ferrous metals within the 0.1500 to 0.2000 inch diameter size range.
Install into a properly tightened 3-jaw chuck before powering the drill. Secure the workpiece before drilling to prevent movement. Follow applicable safety standards for rotating cutting tools, including eye protection and secure workholding. Inspect the cutting edge for wear or chipping before each use and replace if the point shows damage that cannot be corrected by resharpening.
