The CHICAGO-LATROBE 41720 is a jobber-length twist drill bit in wire gauge size 50, measuring 0.0700 inches in diameter, designed for high-performance drilling in ferrous and difficult-to-machine materials. Built from high-speed steel with a titanium nitride (TiN) coating, it delivers extended tool life and reduced friction during cutting. The 135-degree split point starts on contact without a center punch, reducing walking and improving positional accuracy. With a 2-inch overall length and 1-inch spiral flute, this bit is sized for close-quarters work and bench drill press applications. It meets NAS 907 Type B standards and is graded heavy duty for demanding production environments.
The 41720 is well-suited for drilling cast iron, stainless steel, and carbon steel in fabrication shops, maintenance operations, and production drilling setups. The straight-cylindrical shank fits standard drill chucks without an adapter, making it a straightforward drop-in for handheld drills, drill presses, and CNC drilling fixtures. The regular spiral flute geometry and tapered web configuration support consistent chip evacuation across the supported material types. This bit is typically used by machinists, tool-and-die technicians, and maintenance mechanics who require reliable small-diameter drilling performance.
Designed as an OEM-style replacement and production drill bit for use in standard drill chucks accepting a straight-cylindrical shank; primary workpiece materials listed by the manufacturer are cast iron, stainless steel, and steel.
Installation and use should be performed by qualified machinists or maintenance technicians familiar with small-diameter drill bit handling. Secure the straight-cylindrical shank firmly in the drill chuck before operation to prevent slippage and bit breakage at this diameter. Use appropriate cutting fluid or coolant for stainless steel and hard materials to manage heat, as TiN-coated high-speed steel bits can lose temper if overheated without lubrication. Inspect the cutting edges for wear or chipping before each use, as small-diameter bits are susceptible to breakage under side load or excessive feed pressure.
