The CHICAGO-LATROBE 41717 is a jobber length drill bit designed for high-performance metal drilling in demanding trade and industrial applications. This wire gauge size 47 bit measures 0.0785 inches in diameter with a 2-inch overall length and a 135-degree split point for fast, accurate starts without a center punch. The titanium nitride (TiN) coating increases surface hardness and reduces friction, extending tool life in repetitive drilling operations. The bit is manufactured from high speed steel (HSS) and meets NAS 907 Type B standards, making it suitable for heavy-duty use in production and maintenance environments.
This drill bit is built for right-hand, clockwise cutting in cast iron, stainless steel, and carbon steel workpieces. The regular spiral flute with a 1-inch flute length clears chips efficiently, and the web-thinned, tapered web configuration reduces thrust requirements when breaking through harder materials. It fits into standard drill chucks via its straight-cylindrical shank and is used by machinists, maintenance technicians, pipefitters, and sheet metal workers wherever wire-gauge hole sizing is required. The Series 150ASP-TN designation indicates this is a heavy-duty, high-performance production-grade bit.
Designed as an OEM-style replacement or direct-use jobber drill bit for standard drill chucks accepting a straight-cylindrical shank in the 0.0500 to 0.1000 inch diameter range. Compatible with drill presses, hand drills, and CNC machining setups configured for wire-gauge HSS bits.
Install and remove this bit only when the drill or machine is fully powered off and the chuck is stationary. Secure the straight-cylindrical shank firmly in the chuck to the full depth of the shank before operation to prevent runout or slippage. Use appropriate cutting fluid or coolant when drilling stainless steel to manage heat; note this bit does not support through-coolant delivery. Inspect the cutting edges and TiN coating before each use and replace the bit if chipping or excessive wear is observed.
