The CHICAGO-LATROBE 41688 is a jobber-length twist drill bit designed for high-performance metal drilling in demanding trade applications. Manufactured from high speed steel with a titanium nitride (TiN) coating, it cuts wire gauge No. 18 holes with a decimal diameter of 0.1695 inches. The 135-degree split point reduces walking on entry and requires no center punch on most metals. A tapered web with web thinning lowers thrust requirements and improves chip evacuation. The straight-cylindrical shank measures 1.125 inches in diameter and seats securely in standard drill chucks. This bit is built to NAS 907 Type B standards and rated for heavy-duty use by machinists, pipefitters, and maintenance technicians.
This bit is suited for drilling cast iron, stainless steel, and carbon steel in both production and field service environments. The 3.25-inch overall length and 2.125-inch flute length are standard jobber proportions, making the 41688 a direct fit in most drill presses, magnetic base drills, and hand-held electric drills used on structural and mechanical work. The right-hand spiral flute and regular helix angle provide stable chip removal in the workpiece materials listed above.
Designed as a jobber-length replacement or stock drill bit for use in standard straight-shank drill chucks across drill press, hand drill, and magnetic base drill applications where a No. 18 wire gauge hole diameter is required.
Secure the shank fully into the chuck and verify runout before drilling. Power down the drill and disconnect or lock out the power source before changing bits. Use appropriate cutting fluid or coolant when drilling stainless steel to manage heat buildup; coolant-through is not supported by this bit. Follow applicable shop safety standards and employer PPE requirements when operating rotary cutting tools.
