The CHICAGO-LATROBE 41682 is a jobber-length drill bit designed for high-performance metal drilling in demanding trade and industrial applications. Built from high speed steel (HSS) with a titanium nitride (TiN) coating, it delivers improved surface hardness and extended tool life compared to uncoated HSS bits. The bit measures 0.1890 inches in diameter (wire size 12), with an overall length of 3.5 inches and a flute length of 2.3125 inches. The 135-degree split point reduces walking on entry and lowers thrust requirements, making it well suited for hand-held and drill-press work on ferrous materials. Licensed HVAC technicians, pipefitters, plumbers, and general maintenance trades reach for bits like this when drilling pilot holes, access openings, and fastener clearance holes in metal.
This bit is rated for use in cast iron, stainless steel, and steel. The 135-degree split point with web thinning handles the work-hardening tendency of stainless steel better than a conventional 118-degree point. The straight-cylindrical shank with a diameter of 1.1875 inches seats in standard three-jaw drill chucks without modification. The regular spiral flute and tapered web configuration promote chip evacuation in deep holes. It meets NAS 907 Type B specification, making it appropriate for aerospace-influenced maintenance work where dimensional tolerances are critical. Diameter tolerance is held to -0.0007 to 0.0000 inches.

Secure the shank firmly in the chuck before drilling and verify the workpiece is clamped or fixtured. When drilling stainless steel, use a low speed and consistent feed pressure to avoid work hardening the material. Allow chips to clear regularly on deep holes to prevent flute packing and bit breakage. Wear appropriate eye and hand protection per shop safety requirements.
