The CHICAGO-LATROBE 41630 is a jobber-length twist drill bit ground from high speed steel with a titanium nitride (TiN) coating. It measures 15/32 inches (0.4688 inches) in diameter and carries a 135-degree split-point tip that self-centers on contact, reducing the need for a center punch on most metals. The two-flute spiral design in the 150ASP-TN series is rated heavy duty and built to NAS 907 Type B standards. Licensed HVAC techs, machinists, pipefitters, and sheet metal workers reach for this bit when drilling through cast iron, stainless steel, and carbon steel in production and field settings.
This bit is suited for drilling cast iron, stainless steel, and mild steel in both shop and field conditions. Its jobber length makes it a direct fit in standard drill chucks and magnetic drill press setups. The straight-cylindrical shank accepts standard three-jaw chucks without an adapter. Typical applications include drilling pilot holes for pipe hangers, tapping clearance holes in steel framing, and general-purpose metal fabrication tasks that demand a durable, consistently sized hole.
Designed for use in standard drill presses, hand drills, and magnetic base drills equipped with a chuck accepting a straight-cylindrical shank at 15/32-inch diameter. Rated for primary workpiece materials including cast iron, stainless steel, and carbon steel.
A licensed machinist or experienced tradesperson should secure the workpiece firmly before drilling to prevent rotation or movement under load. Secure the bit fully in the chuck and verify runout before beginning a cut. Apply cutting fluid or a suitable metalworking lubricant when drilling stainless steel or cast iron to manage heat and extend bit life. Inspect the cutting edges for wear or chipping after heavy use and replace the bit if the point shows visible damage.
