The CHICAGO-LATROBE 41629 is a jobber-length twist drill bit designed for high-performance drilling in ferrous and hard materials. Built from high speed steel with a titanium nitride (TiN) coating, it delivers extended tool life and reduced friction compared to uncoated HSS bits. The 135-degree split point geometry starts on contact without a center punch and minimizes walking on smooth or curved surfaces. At 5-5/8 inches overall length with a 4-3/16-inch flute length, it fits standard drill presses, magnetic drills, and hand drills with straight-shank chucks. The right-hand spiral flute clears chips efficiently during through-hole and blind-hole drilling operations.
This bit is rated for use in cast iron, stainless steel, and steel — the material types where heavy-duty HSS and TiN coating provide meaningful benefit over standard jobber bits. It is suited for maintenance, fabrication, and general metalworking applications in commercial and industrial settings. The straight-cylindrical shank accepts standard three-jaw chucks without an adapter. Machinists, pipefitters, ironworkers, and field service technicians working with structural or stainless steel will find this a dependable daily-use tool. It meets NAS 907 Type B standards, which are relevant to aerospace and precision manufacturing environments.
Designed for drilling cast iron, stainless steel, and steel in fabrication and maintenance applications. The straight-cylindrical shank fits standard three-jaw drill chucks across portable and stationary drilling equipment.
Install and remove drill bits only with the power source disconnected or the chuck fully stopped. Secure the workpiece firmly before drilling — unsecured material can spin violently when a bit breaks through. Use cutting fluid or coolant when drilling stainless steel or thick sections to manage heat and extend bit life. Inspect the cutting edges before each use and replace bits that show chipping, discoloration from overheating, or loss of point geometry.
