The CHICAGO-LATROBE 11048 is a Series 906 aircraft extension drill bit designed for deep-reach drilling in metal fabrication, aerospace maintenance, and structural applications. Built from high speed steel with an oxide finish, this bit features a 135-degree split point that is self-centering and web-thinned for reduced thrust and cleaner entry without a pilot hole. The straight-cylindrical shank measures 0.1695 inches in diameter, matching the wire size 18 designation. With a 2.125-inch spiral flute length and 6-inch overall length, it reaches into cavities and recessed work areas that standard-length bits cannot access. Right-hand cutting direction. Licensed trades and sheet metal professionals rely on this geometry for consistent, accurate holes in tight quarters.
This drill bit is suited for aircraft-structure repair, sheet metal work, and general-purpose metal drilling where extended reach is required. The NAS 907 Type B standard compliance makes it appropriate for aerospace maintenance environments as well as commercial and industrial fabrication shops. The tapered web configuration reduces walking and improves chip evacuation on through-holes in steel, aluminum, and similar materials. It installs into any standard drill chuck or right-angle drill accepting a 0.1695-inch straight-cylindrical shank.
Designed as an OEM-style replacement or direct specification drill for applications requiring a wire size 18, 0.1695-inch diameter straight-shank aircraft extension drill bit meeting NAS 907 Type B standards.
Installation is performed by machinists, sheet metal mechanics, aircraft maintenance technicians, and general trades using standard drill presses, hand drills, or right-angle drills. Secure the straight-cylindrical shank firmly in the chuck before use and verify the bit runs true to avoid oversize holes or premature wear. Use appropriate cutting fluid for steel applications to extend tool life. Follow applicable workplace safety and FAA or facility maintenance protocols when drilling aircraft structure.
