The CARMEX 16ER20ABUTMXC is a solid carbide laydown threading insert designed for external American Buttress thread cutting at 20 threads per inch (TPI). Manufactured from micrograin solid carbide and coated with a PVD-applied TiN finish, this insert delivers consistent thread form geometry in a wide range of workpiece materials. The 45-degree included angle and right-hand orientation match the American Buttress thread standard profile. With a 3/8-inch inscribed circle and a thickness of 0.146 inches, the 16ER20ABUTMXC fits standard ER-style laydown toolholders used on CNC lathes and manual threading setups.
This insert is suited for external threading operations on components requiring American Buttress thread forms, which are common in applications demanding high axial load capacity in one direction, such as pipe fittings, actuators, and mechanical presses. The universal primary workpiece material designation makes it compatible across a broad range of material groups including steel, stainless steel, cast iron, non-ferrous materials, and high-temperature alloys, covering material codes H, K, M, N, P, and S. It is typically installed and used by machinist professionals operating CNC turning centers or manual lathes.
Designed for use with ER-style laydown threading toolholders accepting a 3/8-inch inscribed circle insert at 0.146 inches thickness. Compatible with workpiece material groups H, K, M, N, P, and S per the input material classification. Verify toolholder seat geometry and clamping style before installation.
Installation is performed by qualified machinists on CNC or manual turning equipment. Secure the machine spindle and confirm the tool turret or holder is fully de-energized before seating or replacing the insert. Use the correct torque wrench and clamping screw specified by the toolholder manufacturer to avoid insert movement or breakage. Inspect the insert seat and clamping components for chips or debris before each insert change.
