The CARMEX 16ER16ABUTBXC is a solid carbide laydown threading insert engineered for right-hand external American Buttress thread forms at 16 threads per inch. It features a PVD-applied titanium nitride (TiN) coating for extended tool life across a broad range of workpiece materials. The insert carries a 3/8-inch inscribed circle, a thickness of 0.146 inches, and a 45-degree included angle with a zero-degree relief angle. This profile suits CNC lathe operations where Buttress thread geometry is required. Installation is performed by machinists and CNC operators working with compatible 16 ER toolholders on production or job-shop threading applications.
This insert is intended for external threading operations on CNC turning centers and manual lathes equipped with 16 ER style toolholders. The Buttress thread form is commonly specified in applications requiring high axial load-bearing capacity, such as hydraulic cylinders, jacks, and heavy mechanical assemblies. The universal workpiece material rating covers a wide range of materials including cast iron, hardened steels, stainless steels, aluminum alloys, high-temperature alloys, and non-ferrous materials, making this insert adaptable to diverse production environments.
Designed for use with 16 ER series threading toolholders that accept laydown-style inserts with a 3/8-inch inscribed circle. Compatible workpiece material codes include H, K, M, N, P, and S per ISO classification, covering cast iron, hardened materials, stainless steels, non-ferrous metals, steel, and high-temperature alloys.
Installation and indexing should be performed by a qualified machinist or CNC operator with the spindle fully stopped and the machine in a locked-out, tagged-out state. Use the correct torx or hex key specified by the toolholder manufacturer to secure the insert clamp or screw to the recommended seating torque per that toolholder's documentation. Inspect the insert pocket for chips or debris before seating the insert, as contamination can affect thread accuracy. Follow applicable shop safety practices and machine tool manufacturer guidelines during all tooling changes.
