The BMI USA 6278 is a lead-free brass 45-degree street elbow in a 1-1/2 inch male-by-female (MXF) threaded configuration. Street elbows combine a male NPT end and a female NPT end in a single body, allowing a direction change without a separate nipple. The lead-free brass construction meets drinking water compliance requirements, making this fitting suitable for potable water systems. Plumbers and pipefitters install this type of fitting to transition flow direction in threaded pipe assemblies where space is limited. At 1.05 pounds, the fitting has substantial wall thickness typical of full-weight brass fittings.
This fitting is used in residential and light commercial plumbing systems where a 45-degree change in direction is needed in a threaded line. Typical applications include domestic water supply piping, irrigation headers, and mechanical room distribution piping. The MXF configuration allows the fitting to thread directly into a female-threaded port or coupling on one end while accepting a male-threaded pipe or fitting on the other, reducing the number of connections in tight spaces.
Designed as an OEM-style replacement or new-installation fitting for 1-1/2 inch NPT threaded plumbing systems requiring a 45-degree street elbow in lead-free brass.
Installation should be performed by a licensed plumber in accordance with local plumbing codes and the International Plumbing Code (IPC). Shut off the water supply and depressurize the line before threading the fitting into place. Apply thread sealant tape or pipe dope rated for potable water to the male threads before assembly. Do not over-tighten; use a pipe wrench and backup wrench to avoid stressing adjacent fittings or pipe.
