The BMI USA 35153 is a malleable iron hex pipe bushing designed to reduce a 3-inch female fitting down to a 1-1/2-inch male thread. The hex body provides a flat wrench surface for controlled makeup torque, reducing the risk of fitting damage during installation. Finished in black, this bushing is suited for low-pressure piping systems in plumbing, gas distribution, and mechanical applications. At 1.63 pounds, the part carries the mass expected of a full-body malleable iron fitting. Licensed plumbers and pipefitters are the primary installers of this type of reducer bushing in both residential and light commercial piping systems.
This bushing is used wherever a piping run requires a concentric reduction from 3-inch to 1-1/2-inch NPT threading. Common install scenarios include branch takeoffs, manifold assemblies, and service connections in gas, steam, or water piping systems where a threaded reduction is required at a valve, meter, or equipment inlet. The hex configuration makes it practical in tight spaces where a standard shoulder bushing would be difficult to engage with a wrench.
Designed as an OEM-style replacement or new-installation fitting for threaded malleable iron piping systems requiring a 3-inch to 1-1/2-inch concentric reduction.
Installation is typically performed by a licensed plumber or pipefitter in accordance with applicable local plumbing and mechanical codes. Shut off and depressurize the line fully before disassembling or installing any threaded fitting. Apply an approved thread sealant or PTFE tape to the male threads before makeup. Do not over-tighten; excess torque can crack malleable iron fittings.
