The BMI USA 20038 is an extra heavy black malleable iron reducing coupling designed to connect pipes of two different diameters in threaded piping systems. Built to extra heavy (XH) schedule standards, this fitting delivers greater wall thickness and increased pressure tolerance compared to standard malleable iron couplings. The black finish is applied through a standard mill coating process common to black iron fittings used in gas, air, and water distribution systems. Licensed plumbers and pipefitters are the primary installers of this type of fitting in both residential and light commercial applications.
This reducing coupling transitions from a 1-1/2 inch pipe to a 1/2 inch pipe and is suited for use in threaded black iron piping systems. Typical installations include natural gas distribution lines, compressed air systems, and industrial piping runs where a diameter reduction is required at a junction. The extra heavy construction makes it appropriate for higher-pressure environments where standard weight fittings may not meet system requirements.
Designed as an OEM-style replacement or new-installation fitting for threaded black malleable iron piping systems requiring a 1-1/2 inch to 1/2 inch reducing connection.
Installation should be performed by a licensed plumber or pipefitter in accordance with applicable local plumbing and mechanical codes, including IFGC requirements for gas piping systems. Shut off and depressurize the piping system completely before removing or installing any fitting. Apply an appropriate thread sealant or PTFE tape rated for the intended service medium before making up threaded connections. Do not overtighten threaded connections, as malleable iron fittings can crack under excessive torque.
