The BMI USA 20032 is an extra-heavy black malleable iron reducing coupling used to join pipes of two different diameters in threaded piping systems. Rated as extra heavy (XH), it delivers greater wall thickness and mechanical strength than standard-weight fittings, making it suited for higher-pressure or higher-stress piping runs. The black finish results from an oil-coat process standard for malleable iron fittings used in gas, air, and similar non-potable fluid systems. Plumbers, pipefitters, and mechanical contractors install this coupling wherever a 1-1/4-inch line must transition down to a 3/4-inch threaded connection.
This reducing coupling is a common component in commercial and residential mechanical systems including gas distribution piping, compressed air lines, and industrial fluid handling. It is threaded on both ends to accept standard NPT pipe and fittings. The extra-heavy classification makes it a preferred choice when system pressure, vibration, or installation conditions demand more robust fittings than Schedule 40-equivalent standard-weight malleable iron.
Designed as an OEM-style threaded fitting for use in standard NPT piping systems requiring a 1-1/4-inch to 3/4-inch reducing connection in extra-heavy malleable iron.
Installation is typically performed by a licensed plumber or pipefitter following applicable code requirements such as IFGC or ASME B16.3 for malleable iron fittings. Isolate and depressurize the system completely before removing or installing any fittings. Apply an appropriate thread sealant or PTFE tape rated for the service medium to all threaded connections. Do not over-tighten threaded connections, as malleable iron threads can be damaged by excessive torque.
