The BMI USA 10868 is a black-finish steel pipe nipple used in piping assemblies across plumbing, gas distribution, fire suppression, and mechanical systems. It measures 1-1/2 inches in diameter and 8 inches in length, providing a reliable threaded connection between fittings, valves, and other pipe sections. The black finish is produced through a mill scale or oil coating process, making it a standard choice for gas and air lines where corrosion exposure is limited. Licensed plumbers and pipefitters install this type of nipple as a routine component in system builds and service repairs.
This nipple is suited for residential and light commercial applications including natural gas supply lines, propane distribution, compressed air systems, and general plumbing rough-in work. It is not intended for potable water lines without verification of local code requirements for black steel in water service. The 8-inch length allows for connections across moderate spans between fittings without additional pipe sections.
Designed as an OEM-style replacement and standard-service pipe nipple for use with 1-1/2 inch NPT black iron or malleable iron fittings in gas, air, and mechanical piping systems.
Installation should be performed by a licensed plumber or pipefitter in accordance with local mechanical and fuel gas codes, including IFGC and IPC requirements where applicable. Shut off and depressurize the line before removing or installing any threaded pipe component. Apply an approved thread sealant or PTFE tape rated for the service medium before making up the connection. Do not overtighten threaded connections; use a pipe wrench with a backup wrench on adjacent fittings to prevent stress on connected components.
