The BK 521-973HN is a black malleable iron hex bushing designed to reduce a 1-1/2 inch male NPT pipe thread down to a 1/2 inch female NPT thread. This fitting is used to transition between two different pipe sizes in a threaded piping system. It is manufactured to meet ANSI/ASTM A-197 material standards, with dimensions conforming to ANSI/ASME B16.14 and B16.39, and threads cut to ANSI B1.20.1. The hexagonal body profile allows for a secure wrench grip during installation. Plumbers, pipefitters, and gas-line technicians are the primary installers of this type of fitting.
This bushing is suited for residential and light commercial plumbing, gas distribution, and industrial pipe systems where a threaded size reduction is required. The black iron construction makes it appropriate for natural gas and propane lines as well as water and air distribution systems. Each fitting ships individually and is flag tagged for easy identification on the job. The Mueller logo is cast into the body of each fitting as a quality identifier.
Designed as an OEM-style replacement or new-installation fitting for threaded black iron pipe systems requiring a 1-1/2 inch to 1/2 inch reduction.
Installation is performed by licensed plumbers or pipefitters following applicable IPC and IFGC code requirements. Shut off all gas or water supply and relieve system pressure before removing or installing any threaded fitting. Apply an approved thread sealant or PTFE tape to the male threads before assembly. Do not over-tighten; use a pipe wrench on the hex body only to avoid damage to adjacent piping.
