The BALAX 18946-00T is a thread forming tap designed for M12x1.75 metric coarse threading in blind hole applications. Unlike cutting taps, thread forming taps cold-form the thread profile by displacing material rather than cutting chips, producing stronger threads with better surface finish. This tap is manufactured from high-speed steel (HSS) and coated with titanium nitride (TiN) for improved wear resistance and lubricity. It carries a 4H class of fit with a D6 thread limit and features a bottoming chamfer with 2.5 chamfered threads, allowing threads to be formed close to the bottom of a blind hole. Machinists and toolroom professionals install this tap in CNC machining centers, drill presses, and tapping machines.
This tap is suited for blind hole threading in ductile and malleable materials including aluminum, copper, brass, and mild steel where chip evacuation is a concern. The bottoming chamfer makes it appropriate for applications requiring maximum thread depth in a blind hole. With an overall length of 3.375 inches and a 1-inch thread length, it fits standard tap holders sized for this shank diameter. The single oil groove aids lubricant distribution during the forming process. Right-hand thread direction is standard for conventional tapping operations.
Designed for use in standard tap holders and tapping heads that accept a 0.367-inch shank diameter with a 0.275-inch square drive. Fits applications requiring M12x1.75 metric coarse right-hand threads in blind holes.
Thread forming taps require a specific tap drill size larger than those used for cutting taps - consult a forming tap drill chart for the correct M12x1.75 forming tap drill diameter before drilling the pilot hole. Ensure the workpiece is securely fixtured and the tap is properly aligned to avoid thread distortion or tap breakage. Apply a suitable tapping fluid or cutting oil throughout the operation. Power down or de-energize the machine before changing or inspecting tooling.
