The BALAX 18409-010 is a thread forming extension tap designed for cold-forming internal metric threads without cutting or producing chips. Built from high-speed steel with a bright, uncoated finish, this tap displaces material to create strong, work-hardened threads in ductile metals. It carries an M6 x 1 metric coarse thread profile with a D9 thread limit and a 6H class of fit, making it suitable for close-tolerance tapped holes. The bottoming chamfer allows threading close to the bottom of a blind hole. Overall length is 4 inches with a 1-inch thread length, and the shank features a right-hand flute direction for use with standard tapping equipment.
This tap is used in production and maintenance environments where chip-free threading is required in ductile workpiece materials such as aluminum, brass, and mild steel. The extension length makes it appropriate for reaching recessed or deep-set hole locations that standard-length taps cannot access. It is installed by machinists and maintenance technicians in both CNC and manual tapping operations. The bottoming chamfer makes it a second-operation tap, typically following a plug or taper tap to bring threads to full depth at the bottom of a blind hole.
Designed for use in ductile metals requiring M6 x 1 metric coarse cold-formed internal threads with a 6H class of fit and D9 thread limit.
Thread forming taps require a properly sized form tap drill, which is larger than a standard cut tap drill, to achieve the correct thread engagement and avoid tap breakage. Secure the workpiece and use appropriate tapping fluid for the base material before operation. Power down or disengage the machine before changing or inspecting the tap. Follow applicable shop safety standards and verify hole depth before using a bottoming tap in a blind hole to avoid overloading the tap tip.
