The BALAX 18074-010 is a thread forming tap designed for M4x0.70 metric coarse blind hole threading applications. Unlike cutting taps, this forming tap displaces material rather than cutting it, producing stronger threads with no chips to clear. It is manufactured from powdered metal high-speed steel with a bright, uncoated finish. The 4H class of fit and D4 thread limit provide consistent tolerance control for precision threaded assemblies. With a bottoming chamfer of 2.5 threads, it threads closer to the bottom of a blind hole than plug or taper style taps. Machinists, tool and die makers, and CNC operators use this tap in production environments where chip-free threading is required.
This tap is suited for blind hole threading in ductile metals such as aluminum, mild steel, and similar materials that respond well to cold forming. The bottoming chamfer makes it the correct choice when thread engagement is needed close to the base of a blind hole. It fits standard M4 tap holders and collets with a 0.168-inch shank diameter and a 0.131-inch square drive. The BXMSG series from BALAX is designed for consistent performance in both manual and CNC tapping setups.
Designed for use in standard M4 tap holders, floating tap collets, and rigid tapping chucks accepting a 0.168-inch shank diameter. Intended for blind hole threading in ductile workpiece materials suitable for cold-form tapping.
Thread forming taps require a specific forming tap drill size, which is larger than a standard cut-tap drill - confirm the correct drill diameter for M4x0.70 forming before drilling the pilot hole. Adequate lubrication or tapping fluid appropriate for the workpiece material must be applied to extend tap life and produce clean threads. Always secure the workpiece and ensure the tap is properly aligned to avoid tap breakage or thread distortion. Follow applicable shop safety procedures and machine manufacturer guidelines when using in CNC tapping cycles.
