The BALAX 18064-010 is a thread forming STI (Screw Thread Insert) tap designed to create internal threads for helical insert installation in metric applications. Made from high-speed steel with a bright uncoated finish, this bottoming-chamfer tap is built for use in blind holes where thread formation must extend close to the bottom. It carries a D4 thread limit and cuts M4 x 0.7 Metric Coarse threads. With an overall length of 2.375 inches and a thread length of 0.875 inches, it fits standard tapping chucks and tap holders used in production and repair environments. Machinists, tool and die makers, and maintenance technicians are the typical users.
This tap is suited for metalworking operations where a threaded hole must accept a helical coil insert rather than receive a fastener directly. The STI profile produces an oversized thread that becomes standard-size after insert installation. The bottoming chamfer makes it the correct choice for blind-hole applications where a taper or plug tap has already started the thread and full thread depth is required near the bottom of the hole. It is commonly used in aerospace, automotive, and general manufacturing repair work.
Designed for use with M4 x 0.7 Metric Coarse helical thread inserts in blind-hole tapping applications. Part of the BXMSTI series by BALAX.
This tap is installed by machinists or maintenance technicians using a standard tapping chuck, tap wrench, or CNC tapping cycle. Before tapping, drill the hole to the specified 75 percent thread drill size of 0.1800 inches and apply an appropriate cutting fluid for the workpiece material. In blind-hole applications, use a taper or plug STI tap first to start the thread, then follow with this bottoming tap to extend threads to full depth. Avoid forcing the tap at the bottom of the hole to prevent breakage.
