The BALAX 14165-000 is a thread forming tap designed for cutting 1/2-20 UNF internal threads in blind hole applications. Unlike cutting taps, thread forming taps displace material rather than remove chips, producing stronger threads with a better surface finish. This tap is manufactured from high-speed steel with a bright uncoated finish and features a bottoming chamfer with 2.5 chamfered threads, allowing threading close to the bottom of a blind hole. It carries a Class 3B fit with an H5 thread limit, making it suitable for precision threaded assemblies. Machinists and tool-and-die professionals use this tap in CNC and manual tapping operations on ductile materials.
This tap is suited for blind hole threading in materials such as aluminum, mild steel, brass, and other ductile metals where chip-free thread forming is preferred. The bottoming chamfer design is particularly useful in production environments where full thread depth close to the hole bottom is required. Its right-hand thread direction and standard 1/2-20 UNF specification make it a common selection for automotive, hydraulic, and general mechanical assembly work. The BXB series designation indicates compatibility with standard tap holders sized for its shank diameter of 0.367 inches.
Designed for use in standard tap holders accommodating a 0.367-inch shank diameter. Suitable for 1/2-20 UNF blind hole threading applications in ductile materials. Part of the BALAX BXB series.
Thread forming taps require a properly sized forming tap drill hole, which is larger than a standard cut tap drill - consult a forming tap drill chart for the correct pilot hole diameter before use. Apply cutting or tapping oil rated for thread forming to extend tool life and improve thread quality. Secure the workpiece and use a calibrated torque-controlled tapping attachment or CNC rigid tapping cycle where possible to avoid tool breakage. Inspect the tap and holder for runout before production runs.
