The BALAX 13962-90C is a bottoming-chamfer thread forming tap designed for producing 7/16-20 UNF internal threads in steel workpieces. Unlike cutting taps, thread forming taps cold-form the thread profile without producing chips, making them well-suited for blind-hole applications where chip evacuation is a concern. This tap is manufactured from powdered metal high-speed steel (PM-HSS) for improved wear resistance and toughness over conventional HSS. A TiCN coating further extends tool life by reducing friction and surface heat during the forming process. The 2B class of fit and H7 thread limit ensure threads meet standard UNF tolerance requirements. Licensed machinists and toolroom technicians are the primary installers of this tap in production and maintenance environments.
This tap is intended for blind-hole threading in steel materials, as indicated by the BXSTEEL series designation. The bottoming chamfer - approximately 2.5 thread pitches - allows the tap to form threads close to the bottom of a blind hole, maximizing usable thread depth. It is a right-hand tap and does not include coolant-through capability, so external cutting fluid application is required during use. It is suited for CNC machining centers, drill presses, and manual tapping operations where consistent UNF thread production in steel is required.
Designed for blind-hole threading in steel applications per the BXSTEEL series designation. Produces 7/16-20 UNF right-hand threads at a 2B class of fit with H7 thread limit.
Thread forming taps require a properly sized forming tap drill - not the standard tap drill for cutting taps - to achieve the correct pre-form hole diameter before tapping. Apply a suitable tapping fluid or cutting oil rated for steel throughout the operation; this tap does not have coolant-through capability. Secure the workpiece firmly and ensure the tap is driven in axial alignment to avoid tap breakage, particularly near the bottom of a blind hole. Follow applicable shop safety procedures and machinery lockout protocols before changing or setting tooling.
