The BALAX 13645-000 is a thread forming tap designed for through-hole threading applications in metalworking and machining. Unlike cutting taps, thread forming taps cold-form threads by displacing material rather than cutting it, producing stronger threads with no chips. This plug-style tap is manufactured from high-speed steel with a bright, uncoated finish and carries an H5 thread limit for close tolerance control. The 3/8-24 UNF right-hand thread profile and 4-thread plug chamfer make it suitable for production and maintenance machining environments. It is typically installed by machinists, tool-and-die makers, and maintenance technicians working in industrial and manufacturing settings.
This tap is suited for through-hole threading in ferrous and compatible non-ferrous materials where chip-free thread forming is preferred. The BXP series designation indicates a fluteless forming design with a single oil groove to aid lubrication during the forming process. At a tapping depth of 1.25 inches and an overall length of 2.9375 inches, it fits standard hand tap holders and machine tap chucks used in drill press, CNC, and manual lathe setups.
Designed as an OEM-style replacement or direct-use thread forming tap for through-hole applications requiring a 3/8-24 UNF, Class 3B, H5 thread limit plug tap in standard hand or machine tap holders.
Thread forming taps require proper lubrication at all times during use - apply cutting oil or tapping fluid rated for the workpiece material before and during tapping. Ensure the tap is properly aligned with the pilot hole before applying torque to avoid tap breakage or cross-threading. Always use the correct pilot hole size for thread forming, as forming taps require a slightly larger pilot hole diameter than cutting taps for the same thread size. This tool should be operated by a qualified machinist or maintenance technician familiar with tapping procedures and appropriate speeds for the material and tap size.
