The BALAX 13526-010 is a thread forming extension tap designed for cutting 3/8-16 UNC internal threads in ductile materials. Unlike cutting taps, this thread forming tap displaces material rather than removing chips, producing stronger threads with a better surface finish. It is built from high-speed steel with a bright, uncoated finish and features a bottoming chamfer for threading close to the bottom of a blind hole. At 6 inches overall length, the extension design provides the reach needed for deep or recessed tapping operations. It carries an H6 thread limit and a 3B class of fit, making it appropriate for standard-tolerance threaded assemblies. Machinists and tool-and-die tradespeople are the primary users.
This tap is suited for production and maintenance machining applications where extended reach is required, such as tapping recessed bosses, deep housings, or locations where a standard-length tap cannot reach. The bottoming chamfer allows threading to within a few threads of a blind hole bottom. It is typically used in CNC machining centers, drill presses, and tapping machines. The right-hand flute direction and 3/8-16 UNC thread size make it a common choice for general mechanical assemblies requiring standard unified coarse threads.
Designed as an OEM-style threading tool for use with standard 3/8-16 UNC tapping applications requiring extended reach in ductile metals and plastics where thread forming is suitable.
Thread forming taps require appropriate tapping fluid or cutting oil matched to the workpiece material and must be used only in ductile materials capable of plastic deformation. Pilot hole sizing is critical for thread forming taps and differs from cutting tap requirements - consult published thread forming drill charts for the correct hole diameter. Secure the workpiece fully and verify spindle alignment before beginning the tapping operation to prevent tap breakage. Power down or de-energize any CNC or power tapping equipment before changing or inspecting tooling.
