The BALAX 13470-000 is a thread forming tap designed for through-hole threading in metalworking and fabrication applications. Unlike cutting taps, thread forming taps displace material rather than cutting it, producing stronger, work-hardened threads with no chips to clear. This tap is manufactured from high-speed steel with a bright, uncoated finish and carries a Thread Limit of H10. It measures 2.9375 inches in overall length with a plug chamfer featuring 4 chamfered threads for guided entry into the workpiece. With a right-hand thread direction and a single oil groove, it is suited for use with appropriate tapping fluid in ductile materials. Machinists and fabricators working in production or maintenance environments install this tap in manual or machine tapping setups.
This tap is designed for through-hole threading applications using the 3/8-16 UNC thread standard. The plug chamfer style makes it appropriate for starting and completing threads in through holes where a gradual lead-in is preferred over a bottoming style. It is commonly used in metal fabrication shops, maintenance and repair operations, and manufacturing environments where clean, chip-free internal threads are required in ductile metals such as aluminum, mild steel, and similar materials. It belongs to the BALAX BXP series, which is engineered for thread forming rather than thread cutting.
Designed for through-hole threading in ductile materials where the 3/8-16 UNC thread form is required. Intended for use with tapping fluid or cutting oil appropriate for thread forming operations.
Thread forming taps are installed by machinists and toolmakers using manual tap handles, drill press setups, or CNC tapping cycles. Ensure the workpiece is secured and the pilot hole diameter is correctly sized for thread forming, as forming taps require a different drill size than cutting taps. Apply appropriate tapping fluid throughout the operation to prevent galling and extend tap life. Never use a thread forming tap in brittle materials such as cast iron, as the forming process requires material ductility.
