The BALAX 12726-010 is a thread forming extension tap in the BXEXT series, designed to cold-form internal threads without cutting chips. Built from high-speed steel with a bright, uncoated finish, it carries a 1/4-20 UNC thread form at an H6 thread limit and a bottoming chamfer style. The extended 6-inch overall length gives machinists and toolroom technicians the reach needed to tap deep or recessed holes that standard-length taps cannot access. The 2B class of fit makes it suitable for most standard fastener applications requiring a functional thread engagement.
This tap is used in production and maintenance machining environments where 1/4-20 UNC internal threads are required in ductile or malleable materials such as aluminum, copper, brass, and low-carbon steel. The bottoming chamfer allows threading to the bottom of blind holes, making it well suited for close-tolerance fixtures, enclosures, and mechanical assemblies where full thread depth is critical. The extension design is commonly specified when a standard tap cannot clear the workpiece setup or fixturing.
Designed for use in materials suited to cold-forming operations, including aluminum, brass, copper, and low-carbon steel, where 1/4-20 UNC internal threads at a 2B class of fit are required.
Thread forming taps require proper lubrication matched to the workpiece material to prevent galling and premature tool wear. Ensure the tap is aligned perpendicular to the workpiece surface before engagement. Use a torque-controlled tapping head or tapping arm where possible to avoid overloading the tap shank. Power down and secure all machinery before changing or inspecting tooling.
