The BALAX 12185-01T is a thread forming tap designed for producing 10-32 UNF internal threads in blind hole applications. Unlike cutting taps, thread forming taps cold-form the thread profile by displacing material rather than cutting it, resulting in stronger threads with no chips to clear. This tap is manufactured from high-speed steel with a titanium nitride (TiN) coating that extends tool life by reducing friction and increasing surface hardness. With a bottoming chamfer of 2.5 threads, it is suited for threading close to the bottom of a blind hole. The H5 thread limit holds tight tolerances for a 2B class of fit. Machinists and toolroom technicians working in metal fabrication and production environments are the primary users.
This tap is intended for blind hole threading in materials where thread forming is appropriate, including mild steel, aluminum, and other ductile metals. The BXB series bottoming profile allows threads to be formed as deep as possible in a blind bore without requiring a through-hole. At 0.875 inches tapping depth and a thread length of 0.600 inches, it suits typical fastener engagement depths for 10-32 UNF applications found in light manufacturing, electronic enclosures, HVAC equipment assemblies, and panel fabrication.
Designed for use in blind hole threading applications requiring a 10-32 UNF, 2B class of fit internal thread in ductile workpiece materials compatible with thread forming operations.
Thread forming taps require the correct drill size for the material being tapped - use the manufacturer-recommended forming tap drill chart, as the drill diameter differs from a standard cut tap drill size. Ensure the workpiece is securely fixtured and apply a suitable tapping fluid or cutting oil before and during use. Power down all equipment before changing tooling and follow applicable machine shop safety procedures. Do not use thread forming taps on brittle materials such as cast iron or hardened steel.
