The BALAX 12183-010 is a thread forming tap designed for blind hole threading in 10-32 UNF applications. Unlike cutting taps, thread forming taps displace material rather than cut it, producing stronger threads with no chips to remove from the hole. This tap is manufactured from high-speed steel with a bright uncoated finish and carries an H3 thread limit for consistent tolerance control. With an overall length of 2.375 inches and a bottoming chamfer of 2.5 threads, it is suited for threading close to the bottom of blind holes. Machinists, tool and die makers, and maintenance technicians install this tap in production and repair applications.
The 12183-010 is used wherever a 10-32 UNF internal thread is required in a blind hole. The bottoming chamfer allows threading to within a few threads of the hole bottom, making it a common choice for tight-tolerance assemblies in aerospace, electronics, and general manufacturing. It belongs to the BALAX BXB series, which is designed specifically for thread forming in ductile materials. The right-hand thread direction and single oil groove support lubricated tapping for improved tool life and thread quality.
Designed for blind hole threading in ductile materials requiring a 10-32 UNF, Class 3B internal thread. Fits standard tap holders and tapping heads that accept a 0.194-inch shank diameter with a 0.152-inch square drive.
Thread forming taps require a properly sized forming tap drill hole, which is larger than a standard cut tap drill - consult a thread forming tap drill chart for the correct hole size before use. Apply a suitable tapping fluid or cutting oil to the tap and workpiece before tapping to reduce friction and extend tool life. Secure the workpiece firmly and ensure the tap is aligned perpendicular to the hole axis before applying torque. Do not use this tap on brittle materials such as cast iron or hardened steel, as thread forming requires material ductility to displace rather than cut.
