The BALAX 11963-010 is a thread forming tap designed for cutting 10-24 UNC internal threads in blind hole applications. Unlike cutting taps, thread forming taps displace material rather than removing chips, producing stronger threads with a better surface finish. This tap is manufactured from high-speed steel with a bright uncoated finish and carries an H3 thread limit designation, indicating a close-tolerance fit suitable for standard 10-24 UNC work. At 2.375 inches overall length with a bottoming chamfer of approximately 2.5 threads, it is built to reach the bottom of shallow blind holes where thread engagement must start close to the hole floor. Machinists, tool and die makers, and general metalworking professionals are the primary users.
This tap is suited for blind hole threading in ferrous and non-ferrous metals where chip-free thread forming is preferred. The bottoming chamfer geometry makes it the correct choice for finishing threads in holes that have already been started with a taper or plug tap, or for threading close to the bottom of a drilled blind hole in a single operation when material is ductile enough to cold-form. It is used in machine shops, maintenance and repair operations, and production environments requiring consistent 10-24 UNC thread quality in tight-clearance locations.
Designed as an OEM-style replacement or direct-use thread forming tap for any application requiring 10-24 UNC right-hand internal threads in blind hole configurations.
Thread forming taps require the correct forming tap drill size, which differs from standard cut-tap drill charts - consult a thread forming drill size chart specific to 10-24 UNC before drilling. Secure the workpiece and use a calibrated tap handle or CNC tapping attachment to maintain axial alignment and avoid tap breakage. Apply a suitable thread forming lubricant or cutting oil throughout the operation. Always verify the hole depth allows for the required tapping depth before starting.
