The BALAX 11043-01T is a thread forming tap designed to cut 5-40 UNC internal threads in a bottoming configuration. Unlike cutting taps, thread forming taps displace material rather than remove it, producing stronger threads with no chips to clear from blind holes. This tap is manufactured from high-speed steel with a titanium nitride (TiN) coating for improved wear resistance and tool life. It carries an H3 thread limit and a Class 3B fit, making it suitable for close-tolerance threaded connections. Machinists, maintenance technicians, and tool-and-die professionals use this tap in production and repair applications.
This tap is intended for blind hole threading where full thread engagement is required close to the bottom of the bore. The bottoming chamfer with 2.5 chamfered threads allows the tap to form threads near the bottom of a blind hole more completely than a plug or taper style. It is well suited for use in softer metals and materials that work well with cold-forming processes. The right-hand thread direction and standard UNC form make it compatible with common inch-series fastener applications in light mechanical assemblies and precision components.
Designed for use in blind hole threading applications requiring 5-40 UNC right-hand internal threads with a Class 3B fit. Suitable for use with standard 5-40 UNC inch-series fasteners.
Thread forming taps require a properly sized forming tap drill hole, which differs from standard tap drill charts used for cutting taps - consult a thread forming tap drill size chart before drilling. Ensure the workpiece is securely fixtured and the tap is driven with appropriate tapping fluid or cutting oil suited to the workpiece material. Align the tap squarely with the bore axis before applying torque to avoid tap breakage or thread distortion. This tap should be installed and operated by a qualified machinist or technician familiar with thread forming processes.
