The BALAX 10624-01T is a thread forming tap designed for producing 3-56 UNF internal threads in blind hole applications. Unlike cutting taps, thread forming taps displace material rather than cut it, resulting in stronger threads and no chips to clear from the hole. This tap is manufactured from high-speed steel with a titanium nitride (TiN) coating that extends tool life by reducing friction and wear. The bottoming chamfer with 2.5 chamfered threads allows threading close to the bottom of a blind hole. Machinists and tool and die technicians use this tap in precision work where thread integrity and close-tolerance fit are critical.
This tap is suited for small-diameter blind hole threading in ferrous and non-ferrous materials in both production and maintenance machining environments. The 2B class of fit is the standard commercial tolerance class for most UNF threaded fastener applications. With a right-hand thread direction and an overall length of 1.8125 inches, it is compatible with standard tap holders used in manual and CNC machining operations. The H4 thread limit supports consistent tolerance control across production runs.
Designed for blind hole thread forming in 3-56 UNF applications requiring a 2B class of fit. Suitable for use with standard tap holders accepting a 0.1100-inch square drive. Verify minimum hole depth accommodates a 0.5000-inch thread length before installation.
Thread forming taps require a specific forming drill size rather than a standard tap drill - consult the manufacturer's forming drill chart for the correct pilot hole diameter before use. Ensure the workpiece is securely fixtured and apply appropriate tapping fluid for the material being threaded. Because this tap forms rather than cuts, higher torque is required compared to a cutting tap of the same size; use a torque-limiting tap holder in production settings to prevent tool breakage. Inspect the pilot hole depth to confirm adequate clearance beyond the thread length before tapping.
