The BALAX 10524-010 is a thread forming tap designed for creating internal threads in blind holes without cutting chips. It operates by cold-forming material rather than removing it, which produces stronger threads and eliminates chip-related problems in blind hole applications. Made from high-speed steel with a bright uncoated finish, this tap is sized for 3-48 UNC threads and carries a 2B class of fit. The bottoming chamfer style - with 2.5 chamfered threads - allows the tap to thread close to the bottom of a blind hole. The H4 thread limit designation helps machinists and tooling technicians select the right tap for the required thread tolerance range.
This tap is suited for production and repair threading operations in blind holes where chip evacuation is a concern. The bottoming configuration makes it appropriate for use after a plug or taper tap has started the thread, or wherever threading must extend as deep as possible into a closed-bottom hole. It is used by machinists, toolmakers, and maintenance technicians working on small-diameter fastener threads in ferrous and non-ferrous materials. The BXB series designation identifies it within the BALAX thread forming product line.
Designed for blind hole threading operations requiring a 3-48 UNC internal thread with a 2B class of fit. Compatible with standard tap holders and collets sized for a 0.1410-inch shank diameter and a 0.1100-inch square drive.
Thread forming taps require a specific tap drill size matched to the material and desired thread engagement - consult a thread forming tap drill chart before drilling. Apply threading fluid to the tap before use, as thread forming generates more torque than cutting taps and adequate lubrication is critical. Secure the workpiece and use a calibrated tap handle or tapping head to maintain axial alignment and avoid tap breakage. Always verify hole depth before tapping to ensure clearance for the full threaded length.
