The BALAX 10522-010 is a thread forming tap designed to cut 3-48 UNC internal threads in blind hole applications. Unlike cutting taps, thread forming taps cold-form material rather than removing chips, producing stronger threads with better surface finish. This tap is made from high-speed steel with a bright uncoated finish and carries a Class 3B fit with an H2 thread limit. The bottoming chamfer - 2.5 chamfered threads - allows threading close to the bottom of a blind hole. Overall length is 1.8125 inches with a 0.5-inch thread length and a 0.141-inch shank diameter. Machinists and maintenance technicians in precision assembly environments install this tap in manual or CNC tapping operations.
This tap is suited for blind hole threading in ductile metals such as aluminum, mild steel, and copper alloys where chip-free thread forming is preferred. The 3-48 UNC size is common in small fastener applications found in electronics, instruments, and light mechanical assemblies. The bottoming chamfer makes it the right choice when thread engagement must begin as close to the hole bottom as possible. Right-hand thread direction is standard. The BXB series designation indicates BALAX bottoming geometry designed for consistent thread quality in production and repair work.
Designed for blind hole threading applications requiring a 3-48 UNC right-hand thread profile with a Class 3B fit. Suitable for use in ductile materials where cold-form tapping is appropriate.
Thread forming taps require a properly sized forming tap drill - not the standard cut tap drill size - to achieve correct material displacement and thread class. Apply appropriate tapping fluid or cutting oil before and during the tapping operation. Ensure the workpiece is securely fixtured and the tap is driven straight and square to the hole to avoid tap breakage at this small diameter. This operation is typically performed by a machinist or maintenance technician following applicable shop safety and tooling procedures.
