The BALAX 10286-010 is a thread forming tap designed for creating 2-56 UNC internal threads in blind hole applications. Unlike cutting taps, thread forming taps displace material rather than cut it, producing stronger threads with no chips to clear from the hole. This tap is manufactured from high-speed steel with a bright uncoated finish and carries a Thread Limit of H6. It is suited for use in soft metals and other malleable materials where thread forming is preferred. The bottoming chamfer allows threading to the bottom of blind holes where access depth is limited. Machinists, tool and die makers, and precision assembly technicians are the primary users of this tap.
This tap is intended for blind hole threading operations in production and maintenance machining environments. The 2-56 UNC thread form is common in small fastener applications found in electronics, instrumentation, and precision mechanical assemblies. The bottoming chamfer with 2.5 chamfered threads enables threading close to the bottom of shallow blind holes. The BXB series designation indicates this is a thread forming design optimized for the small thread size range. It is used with appropriate tapping fluid and a tap wrench or CNC tapping attachment calibrated for small-diameter taps.
Designed as an OEM-style replacement or direct-use thread forming tap for 2-56 UNC blind hole threading operations in soft metals and machinable alloys. Confirm workpiece material suitability for thread forming before use.
Thread forming taps require a properly sized forming tap drill hole, which differs from standard tap drill charts - consult the tap manufacturer forming drill chart for the correct hole diameter. Apply tapping fluid appropriate for the workpiece material before and during tapping. Use a calibrated torque-limiting tap handle or CNC tapping cycle to avoid overloading the small shank on this 2-56 size tap. Secure the workpiece fully before tapping to prevent movement that can break small-diameter taps.
