The BALAX 10285-01T is a thread forming tap designed for creating 2-56 UNC internal threads in blind hole applications. Unlike cutting taps, thread forming taps displace material rather than cutting it, producing stronger threads with no chips to clear. This tap is manufactured from high-speed steel (HSS) and coated with titanium nitride (TiN) for improved surface hardness and wear resistance. It features a bottoming chamfer with 2.5 chamfered threads, making it suited for threading close to the bottom of a blind hole. The H5 thread limit provides a controlled tolerance fit for precision fastener applications. Machinists and tool and die professionals install this tap in machine or hand tapping operations where thread integrity and hole depth are critical.
This tap is intended for blind hole threading in ductile or malleable materials where chipless thread forming is preferred over cutting. The 2-56 UNC designation makes it a common choice for small-fastener work in electronics, instrumentation, and light mechanical assemblies. The bottoming chamfer allows threading to within a minimal distance of the hole bottom, maximizing thread engagement in shallow blind holes. The BXB series designation indicates this tap belongs to BALAX's thread forming product line.
Designed for use in blind hole threading operations requiring 2-56 UNC right-hand threads in ductile materials. Fits standard tap holders and collets sized for a 0.1410-inch shank diameter.
Thread forming taps require a larger pilot hole diameter than cutting taps - consult a thread forming tap drill chart for the correct hole size for 2-56 UNC before drilling. Use a suitable tapping fluid or cutting oil to reduce friction and extend tap life. Secure the workpiece and use a calibrated torque driver or tapping head to avoid overloading the tap shank on this small diameter. Always relieve pressure and back the tap out periodically if tapping by hand to prevent galling.
