The BALAX 10283-01T is a thread forming tap designed for cutting internal 2-56 UNC threads in blind hole applications. Unlike cutting taps, thread forming taps displace material rather than remove chips, producing stronger threads with better surface finish. This tap is manufactured from high-speed steel with a titanium nitride (TiN) coating that extends tool life and reduces friction during forming. The bottoming chamfer style - with 2.5 chamfered threads - allows threading close to the bottom of a blind hole. Overall length is 1.75 inches with a thread length of 0.4375 inches. It carries a Thread Limit of H3 and supports Class of Fit 2B and 3B. Machinists and tool and die makers use this tap in production and repair work where thread integrity is critical.
This tap is suited for blind hole threading in soft to medium-hardness materials where chip evacuation is a concern. The fluteless design eliminates chips entirely, making it well-suited for use in ductile metals such as aluminum, brass, and mild steel. The BXB series from BALAX is a standard production tap line appropriate for both manual and CNC tapping operations. Right-hand thread direction is standard for conventional 2-56 UNC fastener applications in precision assemblies, electronics hardware, and light mechanical components.
Designed for 2-56 UNC blind hole threading in ductile materials using standard tap holders and CNC tapping chucks that accept the 0.1410-inch shank diameter. Supports Class of Fit 2B and 3B per UNC thread standards.
Thread forming taps require a specific forming tap drill size - do not use a standard cut tap drill chart, as the hole must be sized larger to account for material displacement. Ensure the workpiece material is clamped securely and the tap is driven with a synchronized tapping head or rigid CNC tapping cycle to maintain proper thread alignment. Apply cutting or forming fluid appropriate for the workpiece material before and during tapping. Always de-energize and lock out any powered equipment before manually inspecting or changing tooling.
