The BALAX 10124-010 is a thread forming tap designed to cut 1-64 UNC threads in blind hole applications. Unlike cutting taps, thread forming taps cold-form the material to produce threads without generating chips, resulting in stronger thread walls and a cleaner finished bore. This tap features a bottoming chamfer with 2.5 chamfered threads, allowing threading close to the bottom of a blind hole. Manufactured from high-speed steel with a bright uncoated finish, the 10124-010 belongs to BALAX Series BXB and carries a Thread Limit of H4. It is suited for use by machinists, tool and die makers, and maintenance technicians working with small-diameter threaded fastener applications.
This tap is intended for blind hole threading in small workpieces requiring a 1-64 UNC thread form. The bottoming chamfer design makes it appropriate for applications where full thread depth near the bottom of a hole is required. With a right-hand thread direction and a Class of Fit 2B, it produces threads compatible with standard 1-64 UNC fasteners. The compact overall length of 1.6875 inches and shank diameter of 0.1410 inches make it well suited for precision machining operations in small part production and repair work.
Designed for blind hole threading operations requiring a 1-64 UNC right-hand thread form with a Class 2B fit, consistent with standard UNC fastener specifications.
Thread forming taps require adequate lubrication with a suitable tapping fluid or cutting oil rated for the workpiece material. Secure the workpiece and ensure the tap is properly aligned with the pre-drilled hole before engagement to prevent tap breakage at this small diameter. Because this is a bottoming tap, a starting or plug tap should be used first when threading a deep blind hole. Follow applicable shop safety practices and use a calibrated torque-limiting tap handle or tapping head to reduce the risk of breakage.
