The ASHLAND WATER GROUP TA4-8 is a torque arrestor designed to protect submersible well pumps from rotational stress that occurs during motor startup. Each time a submersible pump starts, the motor generates a reactive torque that can cause the pump body to spin against the well casing. Repeated contact accelerates wear on both the pump and casing wall. The TA4-8 clamps onto the pump drop pipe and braces against the casing to absorb and neutralize that startup torque. It fits wells ranging from 4 inches to 8 inches in diameter and is sold in a package of three units, providing enough coverage for a standard pump drop pipe installation.
This torque arrestor is used in residential and light commercial water well applications where submersible pumps are installed in drilled wells. Plumbers and well pump contractors install torque arrestors during new pump installations or as a corrective measure when pump spin-back damage is identified. Multiple units are spaced at intervals along the drop pipe assembly to provide consistent lateral support and torque control throughout the column length.
Designed as an OEM-style replacement and new-installation torque arrestor for submersible well pump assemblies installed in 4 inch to 8 inch diameter drilled wells.
Installation is performed by a licensed well pump contractor or plumber following applicable local well construction codes. Disconnect and lock out all electrical power to the pump circuit before pulling the pump from the well. Torque arrestors should be spaced at regular intervals along the drop pipe per manufacturer and local code guidance. Do not overtighten the clamp beyond hand-firm plus a snug quarter-turn, as excessive clamping force can deform the drop pipe.
