The ASC Engineered Solutions 8700144457 is a close nipple machined from Schedule 40 welded steel pipe with a black oxide coating applied to resist corrosion during storage and installation. A close nipple has no unthreaded center section — threads run from both ends and nearly meet in the middle, making it the right choice when two fittings must be joined with minimal gap between them. Standard NPT threads on both ends allow the nipple to mate with any standard pipe thread fitting. Weighing approximately 0.398 pounds, this is a compact, purpose-built connector for iron pipe systems in gas, steam, and hydronic applications.
This nipple is used in residential and light commercial piping systems where space between fittings is limited. Typical applications include gas supply lines, hydronic heating loops, steam distribution headers, and industrial process piping. The black iron finish makes it appropriate for natural gas and propane distribution where galvanized fittings are not permitted by code. It is installed by licensed plumbers, pipefitters, and gas service technicians working on Schedule 40 iron pipe systems.
Designed as an OEM-style replacement and standard stock fitting for Schedule 40 black iron pipe systems using NPT threaded connections in 2 inch pipe size.
Installation should be performed by a licensed plumber, pipefitter, or gas technician in accordance with applicable local codes, the International Fuel Gas Code (IFGC), or the International Plumbing Code (IPC). Shut off gas supply or depressurize the pipe system completely before disassembling any threaded connections. Apply an approved pipe thread sealant or PTFE tape rated for the service medium — confirm the sealant is listed for gas service before use on gas lines. Do not overtighten threaded joints; hand-tighten first and finish with a pipe wrench to avoid cracking fittings or distorting threads.
