The APEX 3880 is a 5-piece ratcheting tap and die set designed for cutting internal and external threads with less hand fatigue than conventional tap wrench systems. The set applies a ratcheting handle mechanism to the tap and die application, allowing the technician to drive the tool back and forth without lifting and repositioning the hand. The ratcheting arc covers 5 degrees with a reversing lever that eliminates hand-over-hand turning. Hex die adapters are included and work with both round and hex-shaped dies. This set is suited for mechanical, plumbing, and electrical tradespeople who regularly cut or chase threads on fasteners, conduit fittings, or pipe connections.
The 3880 is intended for bench or field use in any application requiring thread cutting or thread chasing. The compact overall dimensions of 12 inches in length, 3 inches in width, and 3 inches in height make it practical for use in confined work areas. It is well suited for HVAC techs, plumbers, and electricians who encounter corroded or damaged threads in the course of service work. The ratcheting drive system reduces the clearance arc needed to turn a tap or die, which is a direct advantage in tight spaces.
Designed for use with standard round and hex-shaped taps and dies as part of a ratcheting tap and die driving system.
Thread cutting with taps and dies should be performed by qualified tradespeople familiar with proper cutting technique, including the use of appropriate cutting fluid for the base material being threaded. Secure the workpiece firmly before beginning thread cutting operations. Always reverse the tool periodically during cutting to break chips and prevent tap breakage. Follow applicable trade codes and manufacturer guidance when cutting threads on fluid-carrying or electrical components.
